The last night of Nirbhaya Convicts

The last night of Nirbhaya Convicts

Today was a fateful day for the four convicts in the Nirbhaya's case. Right at 3 a.m today, all four convicts were taken to the prison grounds, who were sleep-deprived out of fear to be hanged. It is said that none of them slept yesterday out of fear. After the jail officials asked each one of them to take a bath and wear new clothes given by them, the four convicts broke into tears and fell at the feet of the jail staff.

One Tihar official said that they even refused to drink tea when offered. Surely, the convicts ran out of words when asked to speak their mind to jail workers. They couldn't murmur a single word. At 5 a.m, as soon as the DCP of West District reached to meet these convicts, the Jail Superintendent introduced four convicts to the DCP. Soon after they have completed the documentation formalities.

Later, they were taken out from their cells and covered their heads with a black opaque cloth. One of the convicts who realized that they have already reached the hanging room, started crying loudly and scream out hysterically. Dragging them to the hanging platform, the jail officials was accompanied by six wardens. The Tihar official who spilt out the detailed story requested for anonymity and he continued saying that their feet and hands were tied up right from their respective cells.

Just before hanging, they were asked for the last wish, to which no one uttered a word. After a prolonged silence, all the convicts were supposed to be hanged at the same time. Since Pawan was the only hangman, the jail staff helped in pulling the other handles. Around 5.30 a.m, Jail Superintendent S. Sunil signalled to hand the convicts, followed by Pawan and the other persons pulling the handles.

It took nearly 10 minutes for all the convicts to struggle and the doctor who was present there declared the convicts dead. The bodies were sent for post-mortem to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital. The punishment of hang till death is in rare of the rarest cases in India. It's only given if the offence committed is really ferocious and this was the day everyone, who wished for Nirabhaya's justice, waited eagerly.
