Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 23 Years of Prison

The court in New York today sentenced the former Hollywood figurehead, Harvey Weinstein, a 23 years in prison after he was found guilty of sexual assault and rape in a landmark trial.

He was handed the custodial sentence on March 11. 67-year-old Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of raping a woman, also forcing oral sex on a production assistant called Miriam Haley. He was imposed 20 years for a first-degree criminal sex act for forcing oral sex on Ms. Haley and three years for the third-degree rape of a woman who wished not to be named.

Both the sentences will run consecutively and if the maximum sentences were imposed, he could have got 29 years of prison time. As per the victim statement by Haley that was read out in the court, she said Weinstein not only stripped me of my dignity as a human being and as a woman, it diminished my confidence and faith in myself. It is time people who rape other people pay with their life and the life they took'.

While this is on one side, Harvey still faces criminal charges in Los Angeles over the alleged assault of two women in 2013. Also, 12 more women have accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual misbehavior in the last several decades.

Harvey Weinstein will be taken to a reception center in Fishkill and after processing, he will be moved to a prison in upstate New York.
