Veerappan's daughter joins BJP

India's one of the most notorious poacher and sandalwood smuggler late Veerappan's elder daughter, Vidya Rani joined the Bharatiya Janata party on Saturday. Vidya is an advocate by profession and she joined the BJP at an event organised in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu. She said that she was thinking about joining the party from the past two years. The event also had BJP's general secretary Muralidhar Rao and former Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan.

Apart from her lawyer duties, Vidya Rani has always been an active social worker. As soon as she joined the party, Vidya went on to praise her deceased father that he always wanted to serve people. However, she claimed that the path he chose was wrong. Today, she joined the saffron party with the intention of serving the people and the nation, she added. "Irrespective of caste, creed and religion, I am here today only to serve for the poor and underprivileged. I want to take Prime Minister Narendra Modi's schemes a bit closer to the people which are there for their welfare," Vidya quoted.

Earlier, as we recall, Vidya Rani was on headlines after the Tamil Nadu high court had intervened to allow her to marry her boyfriend after her mother Muthulakshmi objected to their wedding. She has always been on not-so-good terms with her mother. On 18 Oct 2004, the Tamil Nadu Special Task Force had killed Veerappan and his two associates Sethukuli Govindan and Chandre Gowda in an operation.
