Tamil actor Kamal Haasan on Wednesday met with the national president of Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi during his trip to New Delhi, as the actor-turned-politician stepped up efforts to widen the influence of his party 'Makkal Needhi Maiam', which's launched at a huge public gathering in Madhurai on 21st February.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the national party president, Mr Kamal said it was just a courtesy meeting while Rahul tweeted- 'Enjoyed meeting Kamal in Delhi today. We discussed wide range of issues concerning our two parties, including the political situation in Tamil Nadu.'
This meeting is likely to be met with large debate in Tamil Nadu, as the efforts from both NDA and UPA are underway to become a strong force in south. Also, the meeting sends out a clearly indication that Kamal is largely expected to be an ally of Congress -but not BJP-and he's backed Rahul and was highly critical of Modi's note ban move.
Earlier in the day, Kamal Haasan met the Deputy Election Commissioner Chandra Bhushan Kumar to officially register his party by providing the necessary details.
Earlier this month, Kamal had a meeting with the newly elected Chief Minister of Karnataka HD Kumaraswamy, who's also an ally of Congress Party, to discuss the Cauvery water issue between two states (Tamil Nadu and Karnataka) and called him for talks to resolve the issue amicably. And he lent his support to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who sat down for a 9-day protest at LG residence demanding him to direct IAS officers' to call off 'strike'.
