Get Ready! Idea, Airtel, Jio hikes tarrifs

Vodafone Idea Ltd, Bharti Airtel Ltd and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd released a statement on Sunday saying that the prepaid voice and data services process will have a spike from this month(December) and will put an end to an extended tariff war that dragged rates to the lowest in the world. All three operators, which are now increasing the prices in various plans, are in the range of 15-47%.

The new tariffs for Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel will commence from Tuesday. For Reliance Jio, the revised tariffs will come into effect on 6 December. The new tariff changes come nearly after a decade of competition. The decision has been made after prices of calls and data services have hit rock bottom with the lowest possible points.

It is known that with the introduction of Jio in 2016, there have been huge record losses faced by Vodafone Idea Ltd and Bharti Airtel Ltd. It was also told by SC to Vodafone's chief executive, Nick Read to seek the Indian government's intervention, saving the company's local affiliate from bankruptcy. Talking about Airtel, the new plans represent tariff increases with 50 paise per day to Rs 2.85 per day.

Also, the popular price pack by Airtel, Rs 169 and Rs 199 has been merged into a single Rs 248. The tariff hike for users of its Rs 169 pack comes to be 47%. On the other hand, Vodafone Idea also announced new plans for prepaid products and services with validity periods of 2 days, 28 days, 84 days and 365 days.

Reliance Jio will launch "all in one" plans which, though 40% costlier, will offer 300% more benefits. The SC directed telcos to pay at least Rs 92,000 crore in past dues to the government within a span of three months. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, along with two others, has filed a plea in the Supreme Court to review the verdict.
