Jio's 'First-Day-First-Show': PVR, INOX Responds

Mukesh Ambani's announcement of Jio's 'First-Day-First-Show' which enables premium users to watch the new release of a movie at their home, has not gone down well with multiplex chains PVR and INOX. In an individual statement, both claimed that Jio's strategy is a potential threat to their business model.

INOX left the option to the producer as it says a producer has the right to choose between theatrical exhibition or release on any other platform. The statement further said, producers, distributors and multiplex owners in India have mutually agreed to an exclusive theatrical window of eight weeks between the theatrical release of a movie and release on any other platform.

PVR Cinemas claim that this concept is carried out in developed nations like US and Europe. But it hasn't worked big time while theatrical and at-home are completely different experiences and each has their own space.

In 2018 with multiplexes, the film industry earned Rs 17,450 crore and a possible growth can be seen. This sums that Jio will have to negotiate with producers on releasing their films on which platform and how to generate their investment.
