Commander Abhinandan To Get Vir Chakra

Brave Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who had shown his courage and braveness when he was caught as hostage by Pakistan and subsequently released, is likely to be honoured with Vir Chakra, one of the country's top military honours. After the Param Vir Chakra and the Mahavir Chakra, the Vir Chakra is the third highest gallantry award in military. During wars, pilots who shot down enemy fighters were all given Vir Chakra medals in the past.

Indian Air Force (IAF) has recommended Abhinandan's name for the honour and Union Defence Ministry said to have accepted IAF's recommendation. An official announcement on the same is expected to be made on August 15 on the eve of Independence Day.

Indian Air Force Pilot Abhinandan had shot down a Pakistani F-16 near the Line of Control (LoC) and he entered into Pakistan's air space. He was found as captive by Pakistan on Feb 27, 2019 after the fighter plane MiG21 (which has Abhinandan) was shot down by Pakistan.

A video of Abhinandan injured by local mob had gone viral immediately and invoked several reactions across the world. In an yet another video released by Pakistan military where Abhinandan was offered tea and "treated well", Abhinandan shown his courage, braveness by refusing to disclose any of the country's secrets and about his work. This made him a star. His patriotism got appreciation from all around. In fact, Abhinandan also became an Icon in Pakistan and he was featured in a Tea ad in Pak.

With pressure mounted from various countries including the US, finally, Pak had decided to release Abhinandan as a peaceful gesture. Abhinandan was released safely on March 1st, 2019 and handed over to India without any conditions.
