Stop Jai Shri Ram Lynchings: Celebs Tell Modi

As many as 49 eminent personalities, including legendary filmmakers, activists and scholars, have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing serious concern over the growing number of violent lynchings in the name of religion and using 'Jai Shri Ram' as a 'war cry'.

Master filmmakers Mani Ratnam, Shyam Benegal, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Anurag Kashyap, Aparna Seen and several others wrote a letter to the PM. They urged Modi to end the lynchings against Muslims, Dalits and other minorities.

The noted personalities mentioned a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report which recorded 840 hate crimes against Dalits and Minorities in 2016. They said that the use of the 'Jai Shree Ram' slogan is leading to law and order issues, and many lynchings are taking place in its name.

"The name of Ram is sacred to many in the majority community of India. As the highest Executive of this country, you must put a stop to the name of Ram being defiled in this manner," the letter said.
