The Indian Air Force has recommended Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman and a few other officers for the Vir Chakra (wartime gallantry award). These are the soldiers who took part in the Balakot airstrikes and subsequent active operations.
The Vir Chakra is the third highest gallantry award in the military after the Param Vir Chakra and the Mahavir Chakra. Also, the 12 Mirage 2000 fighter pilots who carried out air strikes across terror camps in Pakistan on Feb 26 will be recommended for the Vayu Sena Medal, for their display of exemplary courage and valour.
The IAF has also transferred Abhinandan from Srinagar to the western sector along the Pakistan border. The decision was taken after the IAF assessed a security threat to Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman's life as he has been facing threats from JeM. Before joining/deploying, he will be likely to undergo medical tests.
The new transferred place is also a fighter base and if Abinandan is willing, he can continue his flying duties.
