New Year Music: Beware of copyrights notice

It's going to be tough for New Year bash organisers as the City Civil Court of Hyderabad has sent notices to nearly 79 hotels, pubs, bars and others in a music copyright issue.

Mumbai based Novex Communications, has managed to get an injunction which restrains hotels and other from playing music belong to Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited, Eros International Media Limited, Yash Raj Films Private Limited and Tips Industries Limited companies. Novex holds the rights of Bollywood films which have had music acquired by the above labels.

There are nearly one lakh songs from all the four music companies and if the notices are ignored, then the concerned management of hotels and others are likely to face criminal or civil penalties, including possible monetary sanctions and even imprisonment.

The copyright issue seems to be growing. Earlier it was music composer Ilaiayaraaja who served notices to playback singers for singing his songs in concerts. Later he started chargelicensesd royalty for using his songs in musical events.

Novex Communications is said to be issuing weekly, annual licences for hotels, bars, pubs and others for playing their music.
