Following the Election Commission's instruction to Telangana government to stop the distribution of Batukamma sarees, caretaker CM KCR announced that the sarees which were already procured will be distributed to the beneficiaries the next day the Commission lifts model code of conduct.
At a public meeting in Nalgonda, KCR fired a salvo at Congress for obstructing the government from the distribution of sarees. Election commission issued instructions only after the Congress lodged a complaint against the scheme. He said the sarees were stored in gowdons.
The government has placed orders for 95 lakh batukamma sarees and blouses at a cost of Rs 280 crore. 50 lakh sarees were already sent to the districts and stored in the godowns for distribution.
The Commission denied permission to the state government for the distribution of sarees to women on the eve of state's official festival- Batukamma to be celebrated from October 9 to 17.
The EC officials informed the distribution of sarees will attract the violation of model code of conduct which was already in force in the state soon after the dissolution of the state assembly on September 6. Eom
